HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BOX STYLE?

When designing a custom box there are a few components to consider:

1. Box Shape

2. Colour and Print

3. Material and ECT

A corrugated box consists of two components – liner and medium, these determine the strength of the box. The liners are made up of linerboard the flat sheets that are seen on both the inside and outside of a cardboard box. The medium is made up of fluted paper, - the wavy center - that is sandwiched between the two sheets of liner. The flute when glued to the liner becomes very durable and support tremendous amounts of weight.

The medium and linerboard can be combined in a number of combinations depending on the needs of the customer and the purpose of the box.

  • Single-Face: One medium is glued to a single piece of linerboard.

  • Single-Wall: The medium is between two sheets of linerboard.

  • Double-Wall: Two mediums between three sheets of linerboard.

HDG adheres to the new standard of measuring a boxes’ strength - the Edge Crush Test (ECT). The ECT is a measure of the edgewise-compressive strength of a corrugated cardboard box. The ECT test is highly applicable because it is a good measure of the stacking strength of a given box design. To test ECT a segment of fiberboard is compressed between two rigid plates pressed perpendicular to the direction of the flutes until a peak load is established. The calculation is measure in pounds per lineal inch of load bearing edge (lb/in), but is usually reported as an ECT value (ex. 26 ECT, 44 ECT). The strength of the chosen box will also be an important factor to consider when ordering your custom packaging solution.

BOX SHAPE

COLOUR AND PRINT

The box shape can be designed by our packaging designers or created to your specifications. What’s important is that the product fits inside the box seamlessly and working with our experienced sales reps, they can provide test samples to ensure the best fit.

For custom made boxes we provide two base colour options: Kraft (brown) and Oyster (white). The linerboard usually comes in Kraft however Oyster is used in many pharmaceutical, dental and food packaging industries. Linerboard colour also may change the colour of printing on the box. For printing we use the Pantone matching system to provide the most accurate colour matching for logos, graphics and other images you provide us.
